Irish equestrian route.

Connemara riding holidays – 1 week in Ireland from May to September 2019 Monday to Sunday

Experience the wonderful green and rough along on the Atlantic way landscape wild welcome to Ireland arrival arrival on Sunday morning at Dublin airport, meet with your English speaking guide and luxury coach before transfer to the west of Ireland in County Galway. Our journey takes you through rich agricultural land, green fields and old stone walls Heritage city Athlone. On the way stop and visit Clonmacnoise an ancient heritage site. An early Christian site founded by Saint Ciaran in the 6th century on the banks of the River Shannon. The site includes the ruins of a cathedral, eight churches (tenth-thirteenth century), two round towers, three high crosses and a large collection of early Christian slabs. In the visitor center the original crosses and grave slabs are on display. There is an audio-visual show as well as a series of exhibitions.

Onward travel through Athlone situated on the River Shannon is well known to cross stop along the inland waterways of Ireland. The city has a historic past and the horizon is dominated by the castle of Athlone, which is home to the City Museum

DAY 2

Riders on two Mondays meet with their riding gear

Riders gather at the Hotel Meyrick (formerly the Great Southern Hotel), Eyre Square, in the heart of Galway at 10am. Here’s your guide and support team are on hand to move the luggage, bring a picnic and help with the horses.

 

It is a short drive outside the city (approx. 30 min) to the starting point of the journey, in Oughterard. Here you will have your first sight of the horse or pony is to become his partner for the week. Ponies and horses are assigned to the riders, as the rider capacity, weight, height, etc. After tacking up the ride goes and goes directly to the mountains for a long journey that will end in Maam Cross, the site of the famous Horse Fair October. The trail takes riders past the ruins of abandoned cabins since the famine in 1840, which decimated the Irish population. As the winding road through the spectacular scenery of the view is magnificent, spanning the horizon is the vast expanse of Lough Corrib, the largest lake in southern Ireland. After lunch the tour continues through the mountains, through swamps and rocks and wading through streams. Well below the track is «The Quiet Man Bridge», made famous by John Wayne film. The day ends with the first of many flowerbeds along the abandoned Galway to Clifden railway line. At the end of the day the horses become a pasture at the edge of the lake while the riders travel to your accommodation.

Maam Cross Day Three Tuesday Lough Inagh Valley &

After spending the night on the grass by the lake in Maam Cross horses are refreshed and ready to start the journey from Maam Cross to Ballinafad. The first stage of the walk passes through the land of Willie in Maam Cross, where a path leads to the riders along the beautiful Lough Sindle and beyond remains a long lime kiln forgotten, hidden in a grove of hazelnut trees. Some of the trees in the area are old, but they are still tiny, bent by the winds that whip this rough Atlantic area during the winter. Eat lunch in a small village green, while horses graze.

After lunch back to the chair for the final stage of the day ride through silent woods and through the beautiful Inagh Valley. On a clear day, riders can see right over the spectacular scenery of Connemara to the coast in Rosmuc. The day ends with another gallop along the old Galway

coastal village of Roundstone. Beware elves are known to inhabit this area. Below is the breathtaking scenery of the bay of the dogs, which curves toward the Atlantic Ocean. The horses spend the night in a pasture in Toombeola while the riders travel back to Clifden for the night.

Day Seven Saturday

Riders will be collected from the Hotel / Guesthouse in the morning and taken to Dartfield, Willie purpose built equestrian and heritage center. After a warm welcome with hot port or whiskey, we will turn the horses and enjoy a trekking through the estate of 350 acres. The route passes through forests and fields and the option to jump on our cross country field already hosted an international event 3 stars. Lunch will be in our cafeteria here at Dartfield and you have the opportunity to visit the only museum in Ireland devoted to Irish horses / ponies and dog breeds and browse our tack and gift shop. The afternoon passed back riding here in Dartfield, hack and jump out before it’s time to say goodbye to your four-legged friend.

Farewell dinner and overnight at Galway City Hotel

The trails are true post to the trails, guided through the mountains and along the coast of Connemara by Willie Leahy and his professional staff. Travel daily 6 to 7 hours through the spectacular mountain scenery and along deserted beaches to the next pasture his Monte. Each day starts in one place and ends the day about 20 miles away. See the landscape change as it travels great distances, becoming one with his Irish horse or pony Surefooted, in the spirit of a true explorer.

Equestrian Center Dartfield

During the winter Willie Leahy is based on Dartfield equestrian center, a facility with a purpose built 20,000 square feet with a field of cross-country to suit riders of all levels established

 

coastal village of Roundstone. Beware elves are known to inhabit this area. Below is the breathtaking scenery of the bay of the dogs, which curves toward the Atlantic Ocean. The horses spend the night in a pasture in Toombeola while the riders travel back to Clifden for the night.
